How ISO 9001 Facilities Use Epoxy Flooring to Elevate Customer Experience

Aerotech Machining is a Georgia-based CNC company manufacturing custom parts and serving clients from around the globe. Founded in 1992 with a mission to provide state-of-the-art precision parts—particularly for the aviation industry—their experienced team of professionals utilizes advanced technology to create parts from stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, plastics, and more. The 45,000 SF facility includes a wide range of CNC machines, waterjet cutting, conventional machining, assembly, and kitting operations.

Industries Served:

  • Aerospace
  • Power Generation
  • Agriculture
  • Railway Industries

Aerotech has been a client of Liquid Floors for several years. With a range of high-profile clients touring the manufacturing facility, cleanliness is always a top priority. We have installed high-performance flooring throughout the entire manufacturing space. Their facility and culture are second to none within the industry.

As an ISO 9001:2015 and AS 9001 D registered company, Aerotech Machining implements quality assurance at every step of the manufacturing process. ISO 9001 is a globally recognized standard for quality management. It defines seven quality management principles, including continual improvement and strong customer focus. While not mandatory, this certification sets advanced manufacturers apart from their competitors.

You will find aspects of resinous floor coatings in many ISO 9001 facilities. High-performance flooring not only creates a cleanable surface, but the benefits of light reflectivity aid in the manufacturing process. Industrial flooring, such as polished concrete, can increase light reflectivity by 100%, while epoxy flooring can boost it up to 300%. In environments where standards and quality are critical, industrial flooring is essential.

ISO 9001 standards also emphasize organization and safety. While all manufacturing facilities and new construction sites stress safety, not everyone understands the role that the organization plays. Dedicated traffic lanes for material-handling equipment and clearly defined storage areas for raw materials greatly improve productivity and safety. Urethane line striping and safety markings clearly delineate areas for vehicles, pedestrians, machinery, and raw materials. Floor safety markings help keep employees, visitors, and potential clients safe from hazards.

Epoxy flooring helps maintain order in the workplace by keeping forklift and pedestrian traffic separate. Many clients choose a solid color floor coating for pedestrian aisles and an alternative color, or even polished concrete, for the main traffic aisle. In areas where chemicals are stored, Novolac epoxy or Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) floor coatings may be required. For wet environments, cementitious urethane with added traction grit can increase slip resistance. A variety of options are available and can be customized to meet your unique environment. Building the correct resinous flooring specification ensures your facility is safe, organized, and aligned with your ISO 9001 goals.

To support the standards and vision for Aerotech’s manufacturing floor, we began by diamond grinding the surface with 25-grit diamond cutters. This removed the old coating system and opened the concrete’s pores to accept the epoxy floor primer. Next, we applied a high-build pigmented epoxy to increase impact resistance. Once the body coat was fully cured, we screen-sanded the floor and thoroughly cleaned it in preparation for the topcoat. A final topcoat of chemical-resistant urethane was applied, meeting the standards expected by the aviation industry.

As we discussed in our recent Flight Safety Post, the aviation industry’s safety guidelines begin long before an aircraft takes flight. Epoxy flooring provides many critical benefits to ensure aircraft components are manufactured to the highest standards. When current or potential clients visit the facility, there will be no question about the quality standards Aerotech demands from itself and its trade partners.
